Energy Saving Opportunities

Spring is coming and once the pollen starts to fly, it’s a great time to capture energy savings by having your units’ coils cleaned and changing your filters.  Accumulations of dust, dirt, pollen and debris in the coils act as an insulator cutting down on their effectiveness, and dirty filters make your system work harder to deliver the same amount of air.

A 2006 study by ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) showed that, “Good maintenance and operation practices including coil cleaning can significantly improve energy efficiency and IAQ (indoor air quality) performance of the HVAC&R systems in a building, such as reported here of 10% to 15%.”

A 2016 white paper from NADCA (the National Air Duct Cleaners Association) shows even more dramatic impacts, including an average 54% improvement in air flow, measured in CFM (cubic feet per minute) in commercial buildings, from cleaning the system.

That doesn’t even count the potential benefits of sealing leaks in your ductwork, which can leak between 10% and 25%, and sometimes more, in a typical commercial building.  Sealing leaky ductwork from the inside using Aeroseal® technology can cut the leakage to under 10%, and often under 5%.
